The government cautions the youth about the rising use of harmful substances, including vaping, alcohol, cannabis misuse, and illicit drugs.

Vaping is harmful because it often contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance that interferes with brain development, especially in teenagers and young adults.

It affects both mental and physical health by increasing anxiety, mood swings, and attention problems, while harming the lungs and overall fitness.

Excessive drinking impairs judgment, increases the risk of accidents and violence, damages the liver, and negatively affects school and work performance.

Cannabis misuse is dangerous and risky. It can affect memory, learning and mental health, and may increase the risk of depression or psychosis in vulnerable individuals.

Illicit drugs have life-threatening consequences. Substances such as methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine can lead to addiction, overdose, long-term health damage, and even death.

Young people who are struggling are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult, teacher, healthcare provider, or counsellor.

The department of social development’s command centre offers counselling and support from trained social workers and can be reached toll-free on 0800 428 428.
