Ntokoto Mabasa murder case postponed as DPP considers trial venue

The murder case against Wits law student Ntokoto Mabasa has been postponed yet again, as the court awaits a crucial decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions on where the matter will be heard.

The murder case against 22-year-old Wits law student Ntokoto Mabasa has once again been delayed, with the state requesting more time for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to decide whether the matter should remain in the magistrates’ court or be transferred to the High Court.

Mabasa made a brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. She faces charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of her 31-year-old boyfriend, Xichavo Ntsanwisi, at a Midrand apartment in September last year.

According to the state, Ntsanwisi was discovered dead with a stab wound shortly after an eyewitness saw the couple engaged in a heated domestic dispute.

Mabasa was arrested soon after the incident and released on R10 000 bail the following month. Her bail conditions remain strict, requiring her to report weekly at the Midrand Police Station.

During Thursday’s proceedings, state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri asked for a postponement to allow the DPP to finalise the venue decision. Magistrate Reiner Boshoff granted the request, rolling the matter over to June 25.

The case has already faced multiple delays, largely due to outstanding forensic results, including DNA and fingerprint analyses, as well as further investigations.

Mabasa is expected back in court next month, when clarity will be provided on whether her case will proceed in the magistrates’ court or be transferred to the High Court.
