Raiders’ keeper holds firm amid Mhlaba’s relentless attacks
Gavin Mandlati endured wave after wave of attacks, keeping the Raiders ahead before teammates sealed the win.
In the high-stakes world of the ANLFA Promotional League, few positions carry the burden quite like that of a goalkeeper protecting a slender lead.
On May 31 at the Alex Safe Hub, Raiders FC goalkeeper Gavin Mandlati stood as the final line of defence in a match that tested his concentration and shot-stopping ability.
Raiders entered the second half with a 2-1 advantage after a strong first-half display. What followed was an unrelenting onslaught from Mhlaba FC. Wave after wave of attacks built toward the Raiders’ box, with powerful shots, dangerous crosses, free kicks, and corners testing Mandlati repeatedly.

The intensity was evident, and for Mandlati, the stakes could not have been higher.
“The second half was really intense. You could see that they kept attacking and building up to our box,” Mandlati reflected.
At 2-1, the margin for error was nonexistent. One slip, one misjudged dive, or a moment of hesitation could have handed Mhlaba an equaliser and potentially altered the destiny of the league title race.

Mandlati said he felt that pressure weighing heavily on him. Raiders’ Kelly Bueli-Maloba’s third goal finally lifted the weight off Mandlati’s shoulders, adding to the two goals scored by Manqoba ‘Sgora’ Shange and Ntambwe ‘James’ Kamanya in the first half. With a 3-1 lead, Mandlati could finally breathe. When Shange scored their final goal, Mandlati’s shoulders felt even lighter.
“When they scored, I was really relieved, because when it was 2-1, it was really tough for me. I was under pressure, and I had this thing of what if I make a mistake that might cost us the entire league.”
The first-half concession had already disappointed the shot-stopper, who had hoped for a clean sheet.
Raiders’ coach Thuso Mthethwa acknowledged the tension that gripped the team as Mhlaba found their rhythm for a sustained 20-minute period.

With key players nursing injuries, Mthethwa opted for substitutions to disrupt the visitors’ momentum. The gamble paid off.
Mhlaba, chasing the equaliser, committed more numbers forward, leaving themselves exposed at the back. Raiders eventually exploited this vulnerability to extend their lead.
Mhlaba coach Ndabezinhle Mhlaba praised his side’s attacking intent while lamenting defensive lapses. Furthermore, he singled out Mandlati’s excellence.
‘Their goalkeeper was good. If you check the shots on target that we had, there were so many, but we could not score goals,” said Mhlaba.
