Alex residents run towards holistic wellness
IrunWithThemba continues to show that in a busy world full of challenges, sometimes the best medicine is good company, fresh air, and moving forward together, one step at a time.
When people lace up their shoes and hit the road as a community, a special kind of magic happens.
Some find fitness, others healing, and many discover both, according to aerobics instructor Teresa Maenetja.
Speaking after IrunWithThemba’s breakfast fun run on May 30 at Kwabhekilanga Sports Ground, she highlighted how the event was not just about exercise, but also about giving hearts as much attention as legs. She emphasised that beyond fitness and health, IrunWithThemba provides a platform to shake off life’s worries and feel human again.

“This health and fitness thing is also therapeutic. Remember, many people are going through challenges in life. When they see someone engaging in positive activities, the mind, heart, and soul become clear,” she said. Maenetja described the group as an escape from everyday pressures. “When we are here, we forget our problems and focus on the trail. You hit the road, and that becomes your only challenge.”

The Saturday fun run offered participants more than just a workout; it was also a chance to socialise. “Running is good because you network, it’s fun, it’s social, and it benefits one’s health and fitness.”
What makes the running group remarkable is the sense of belonging it fosters. This family-like atmosphere has contributed to its growth over time. While the runners usually take to the streets of Alex to cover a 5km distance, on May 30, they completed the run on the track at Kwabhekilanga.

Coach Nkululeko Mthimkulu said running together at the same place and time makes all the difference. “If we are together, doing the same things, at the same place, they get that form,” he said.

He added that the group spirit kept everyone motivated, ensuring no one got left behind. Experienced runners cheer on newcomers, and that shared encouragement transforms the run into something much bigger than exercise.

The event also received support from the Ndaa Foundation, which provided refreshments and joined in the community spirit. “All of us are working for the community. Ndaa Foundation and IrunWithThemba share the same objectives of serving the community,” said Ndaa Foundation chairperson Kenny Hlaise.
