Alexandra father’s hope shatters in tragic multi-vehicle crash
A father's hope was shattered when his toddler was thrown from a window during a horrific crash in Alexandra. A pregnant young woman also suffered head injuries.
What was meant to be a day of hope and a fresh beginning for Genuine Bhiza and his family, ended in trauma on July 15, following a devastating multi-vehicle accident that left his three-year-old son hospitalised.
Bhiza had spent nearly the entire day searching for a place to rent in Alexandra. Just as hope seemed to be fading, his phone rang with the news he had been waiting for: A rental space was available for viewing. At the time, Bhiza was in Rivonia with his family: his partner, their newborn baby, and their three-year-old son. Filled with anticipation, they immediately set off for Alexandra to view what they hoped would be their new home.

That anticipation was shattered along Alfred Nzo Street, when a white minibus taxi slammed into his vehicle before ploughing into others. At least four cars, including the taxi, were wrecked between 11th and 13th Avenue. Bhiza recalled seeing the taxi hurtling toward them, but said traffic ahead left him trapped. He, his partner, and their three-week-old baby escaped serious injury, but their son was not as fortunate.
“Unfortunately, the three-year-old was the one who has got a bad injury because he came out through the window,” Bhiza said, confirming the boy was rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

The crash has also dealt a severe blow to the family’s survival. Bhiza’s car sustained front-end damage and a shattered windshield. “Now, I don’t know what to do. This car is what I am using to make a living.”
The devastation of the crash rippled through other families. Another vehicle was reportedly rear-ended, forcing it off the road and into a rock. The two occupants, a young man and a pregnant woman, both in their 20s, sustained head injuries and were rushed to the hospital, according to their great-uncle, Mafika Morajane.
He shared the family’s anxiety as they wait for medical updates. “We don’t know what is going to happen.”
The exact number of vehicles involved in the pile-up, and the full extent of the injuries sustained by the victims, has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities.
Alex News reached out to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla for official comment on July 16, but an official statement had not been released at the time of publication.
