Gauteng transport inspectorate swoops in on Gauteng roads
Transport inspectors pull dozens of dangerous taxis off public roads following severe mechanical faults and widespread driver non-compliance.
The Gauteng transport inspectorate, working with the road traffic management corporation, ran high-impact stop-and-search operations from July 27 to August 2 along high-risk public transport corridors in the province’s main metropolitan areas.
Eleven minibuses were taken off the road after serious mechanical faults were found, including faulty brakes, worn tyres, and defective lights.

A further 42 discontinue notices were issued – 12 in Tshwane, 13 in Johannesburg, and 17 in Ekurhuleni.
Thirty-three minibus taxi drivers were caught without valid driving licences and 32 vehicles were operating without valid licence discs.
Nine motorists were arrested for offences that included fraud and driving under the influence, and more than 900 manual Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences infringement notices were handed out, while 815 electronic notices were issued through e-Force devices.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela praised the officers’ efforts. “Through these stop-and-search operations, we are not only removing unroadworthy vehicles from our roads, but also sending a clear message that lawlessness and non-compliance will not be tolerated.
“We remain committed to building a safer, more reliable, and accountable public transport system for the people of Gauteng.”
She added that the operations also help disrupt criminal activity and restore discipline in the public transport sector.
