Last chance to register as online voter registration closes tomorrow
Eligible South Africans have until midnight on Friday, 7 August to register or update their details online or via WhatsApp ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
South Africans who still need to register to vote or update their details have until midnight tomorrow, August 7, to do so online or via WhatsApp.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that the online voter registration portal and WhatsApp service will close at midnight on Friday.

The 2026 Local Government Elections are scheduled for November 4.
Eligible voters who missed the final in-person registration weekend on August 1 and 2 can still register or update their information through the IEC’s data-free online portal at registertovote.elections.org.za until August 7.
Alternatively, voters can register via WhatsApp by sending “Hi” to 0600 88 0000. The service uses secure identity verification.

To check registration status, SMS ‘myID’ followed by your ID number to 32810, or call the IEC contact centre on 0800 11 8000.

To register, you must be a South African citizen, at least 16 years old, though you may only vote from age 18, and hold a green barcoded ID book, smart ID card, or valid temporary identity certificate.
The IEC urges eligible voters not to leave it to the last minute, as channels often become busier closer to the deadline.
