Police in Alexandra recorded three cases of rape between September 20 and 26, according to Alexandra Police Station commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane.

Ngubane said police arrested three suspects after victims reported the incidents. He confirmed that the cases involved suspects known to the victims.

Referring to a previously reported incident, he noted that the parties initially gave mutual consent, but the victim later withdrew consent during the act, and the suspect allegedly refused to stop. “Even if they had an agreement, once the lady says stop, stop. When she says no, it means no,” Ngubane said, stressing that once consent is withdrawn, the act must stop.

Regarding arrests, Ngubane compared rape to other offences, such as assault and malicious damage to property, noting that suspects in these cases are usually arrested. He said that of 19 common assault cases recorded last week, police arrested 14 suspects. Of 12 recorded cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, police arrested four suspects.

Police arrested 30 other suspects on various charges last week, ranging from attempted murder to immigration-related offences. Police recorded three counts of attempted murder, with Ngubane confirming officers made a single arrest. According to Ngubane, police also arrested five people on drug-related charges, and one person for a firearm-related offence.

He said officers arrested 23 undocumented foreign nationals, bringing the total number of immigration-related arrests to 143 for September.

Police investigations remain ongoing as officers work to arrest other suspects, including one linked to a single murder case recorded last week.
