Residents across Gauteng should prepare for possible severe thunderstorms after the South African Weather Service issued a level 2 (yellow) warning on Tuesday morning.

The warning is valid from 12:00 on September 29 until 07:00 on September 30. It indicates a high likelihood of thunderstorms developing, although the overall impact is expected to remain relatively low.

According to the alert issued by the Gauteng provincial joint operations centre and the Gauteng Police Board Community Intelligence, the storms could bring localised flooding, damaging winds and hail. These conditions may pose a risk to community safety, particularly in areas prone to flash flooding or where trees and infrastructure are vulnerable to strong winds.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions while the warning remains in force.

• Unplug non-essential electrical appliances if thunderstorms with lightning are nearby.
• Do not shelter under trees or near power lines during a storm.
• Drive with extra caution and reduce speed if conditions deteriorate. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
• Check on elderly neighbours, people living alone, or those with limited mobility.
• Keep a basic emergency kit ready, including a torch, a charged cellphone, bottled water, and important documents.
• Monitor only official weather updates and avoid sharing unverified information on social media.
