My Maths Buddy makes inroads at MC Weiler
Since the introduction of the My Maths Buddy at MC Weiler Primary School in the past seven years, the school is beginning to reap the fruits of the programme.
Lombard Insurance recently sponsored a programme called ‘My Maths Buddy One Learner Project’, which is an initiative of the South Africa Mathematics Foundation, at the MC Weiler Primary School in Alexandra.
The project aims to provide support for learners who are struggling with maths by implementing effective teaching techniques and strategies for teachers, as well as providing comprehensive resources and training for the learners themselves.
Lombard Insurance has been sponsoring the My Maths Buddy Project for the past seven years, bringing about positive change in the lives of learners in Alexandra. The impact of this project can be seen through the improved results of the Grade 5 learners, the project said in a statement.
It said since the delivery of Grade 5 materials at the beginning of term four last year, there has been a consistent upward trend in their performance from term two to term four. Comparing their results at the beginning and end of the year, there is an impressive increase of 13.7%, the project said. In addition to evaluating Grade 5 learners, the performance of Grade 6 learners was also assessed. From term one to term four of this year, there has been a noticeable increase of 6% in their maths scores.
Feedback from the learners themselves reflects the positive impact that My Maths Buddy has had on their learning experience. A Grade 5 learner said, “I have learned about mathematics and now I know how I’m going to answer questions in maths.”
Another Grade 5 learner said, “I believe I will do better now in maths than before, thank you My Maths Buddy dictionary.”
The sponsorship provided by Lombard Insurance has enabled the school to implement this valuable programme and make a significant difference in the lives of the learners.
Through initiatives like My Maths Buddy One Book One Learner Project, the insurance company has continued to demonstrate its commitment to supporting education and empowering young minds, the statement said.
