Alex rugby players to shine at Iqhawe Week

Alex rugby players from the Alexandra Wolves Rugby Club will have the opportunity to showcase their skills during the Hollywood Foundation’s Iqhawe Week which is organised by the Cell C South African Rugby Legends Association in partnership with the South African Rugby Union.

Eight rugby players from the Alex Wolves Rugby Club have been selected to play under the Golden Lions U15 sides in the Hollywood Foundation’s Iqhawe Week matches at the Johannesburg Stadium.

Games for the eighth edition of Iqhawe Week, which will start with registrations on Sunday [October 2] and run until October 6. The event is by the Cell C South African Rugby Legends Association in partnership with the South African Rugby Union and the City of Johannesburg.

Iqhawe Week is South Africa’s premier rugby development tournament for U15 boys’ teams and is back after a two-year break following the outbreak of the Covid-19 global pandemic.

This year the week will comprise of 14 boys’ teams and four teams for girls taking to the field and among them will be the eight players from Alex Wolves.

The Wolves club has already held its own Iqhawe Week for schools in Alexandra from which the eight players participating in this week’s provincial Iqhawe Week were selected.

Speaking at the launch of the Iqhawe Week at the Emirates Airline Park on September 29, CEO of the rugby legends association John Smit said he was delighted that the Hollywood Foundation had answered the call and came on board.

“This is good news for the development of rugby in the country and the project of taking our children off the streets and away from drugs into a game of rugby in order to showcase their talent, energy and hunger to succeed,” Smit said.

The eight selected Alex players are Athandile Gugu; Ntsako Sithole; Khumo Mabe; Junior Mthethwa; Lineo Lekwane; Banele Ndziba; Themba Nxumalo; and Thabang Sikhonyana.
