MC Weiler girls retain trophy as Bovet boys crowned new champs
MC Weiler girls made history by retaining the Discovery Alex Schools U13 League trophy while former whipping boys Bovet managed to engrave their name on the trophy for the first time after a brilliant tournament.
MC Weiler girls made history by having successfully defended their Discovery Alex Schools U13 League trophy while former whipping boys Bovet boys were crowned new champs.
This was at the finals of the tournament played on November 3 at the Alexandra Stadium, in which both the girls and boys finals were settled on penalties after the MC Weiler girls were tied 1-1 with Ekukhanyisweni while the Bovet-Iphutheng match ended in a goalless draw.
MC Weiler girls scored all three penalties while Ekukhanyisweni missed their two spot kicks, thereby paving the way for the referee to end the match as they could not overcome the deficit with one more penalty to take.
In the Bovet-Iphutheng boys final, both teams played well and had numerous scoring opportunities though Iphutheng had more chances than Bovet but could not convert any of them.
The winner of the final had to be decided on the lottery of penalties and Bovet converted all of the three spot kicks they were supposed to take while Iphutheng missed one and converted the other, but they too could not overcome the deficit with one spot kick left and the referee declared the match as having been won by Bovet.
Losing coach and teacher at Iphutheng, Lota Kekana also agreed that both teams played well but indicated that luck was not on the side of his boys as they failed to convert the numerous chances that fell their way.
“Had they done so, maybe we would be talking a different story now,” Kekana said, adding; “We will try next year again to see whether we can secure the elusive third trophy of the games.”
MC Weiler girls and Iphutheng boys are the only teams that have won the trophy twice and MC Weiler girls are the only side to have successfully defended the trophy.
