Athletics is on the road to revival for youngsters in Alex
The cast of the popular DStv Telenovela, Gomora, will join the Run Alex Athletics Club's juniors' event to give words of encouragement and advice to the youngsters in the township.
Run Alex Athletics Club will this month mark the second anniversary of the launch of the Run Alex Juniors programme with a Freedom Day [April 27] athletics event at the KwaBhekilanga Sports Ground.
Club manager and founding member Siphiwe Nkosi said the juniors programme was founded on the basis of reviving the township’s vibrant athletics history. That will give the youngsters in Alexandra a platform, to participate in events across the province.

Through participating in provincial events, their talents are exposed to the possibilities of being selected for provincial and national teams. This forms the main objective of this programme – to present a platform for the youngsters in the township to discover and expose their talents, Nkosi said.
The event, which starts at 08:00 and will involve sprints in the 80m, 100m, 200m, 400, and 800m disciplines. Aspiring sprinters between the ages of nine and 18 participate in different sprints on the day and hope to discover their love and talent for athletics and eventually form part of the club’s junior programmes.
“Life in Alex has not been told on television like it has been shown on the popular DStv Telenovela, Gomora. All the challenges faced by the young ones growing up in Alex such as crime, alcohol abuse and teenage pregnancy are well captured.
“Gomora has joined hands with Run Alex in this event. Not only as a sponsor but to also avail members of their cast to the youth of Alex. They will give talks, share advice on life’s challenges and general participation in this event,” Nkosi said.
