Alex’s Gomora FC takes part in Walter Sisulu soccer challenge

Gomora FC will be Alexandra's only representative in the 20th edition of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge.

Alexandra will be represented by Gomora FC in the 20th edition of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge which kicks off at the Shapa Soweto from December 1-23.

The men’s open category and U17 categories are full, but some spaces are available within the women’s categories, and teams are encouraged to urgently secure their spots by entering their teams for the women’s categories- those entries close on November 24.

Hosted in partnership with Safa Joburg Region, the grassroots diski development tournament will welcome more than 3 000 players from far and wide, including far-flung areas like KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga.
Deon Curtis, senior marketing manager for sponsorships at Discovery, said the 120-team and three-week tournament strategically aligns with Discovery’s core purpose of making people healthier and enhancing and protecting their lifestyles.
“There’s something for everyone in this tournament, providing a professional platform for promising players to perform.

Communities rally in support of the diski talent on display, and as Discovery, we will continue to invest in school sports and the communities in which we serve, and this tournament is one of many that speaks to our goal of getting more people active.”
Safa Johannesburg president Phil Mogodi described the tournament as a breeding ground for South Africa’s future stars of Bafana Bafana. One of these stars is former Mamelodi Sundowns player and tournament ambassador Thulani Hlatshwayo, who used this tournament as a launch pad for his professional career.

“This tournament is proud to have hosted the likes of Sibusiso Vilakazi, Percy Tau, Portia Modise, Lyle Foster, Ronwen Williams, Andile Dlamini and many more.”
Hlatshwayo, who also played for the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, told other aspiring players to make their mark just like him, who started off playing for Senaoane Gunners in this competition before being snapped by then Wits.
