United leads the pack
ALEXANDRA - Hope City Giants hope to consolidate their lead on top of the Safa Second Division league as they battle for promotion to the National First Division.
Alex United, affectionately known to its loyal fans in the oldest township as the Hope City Giants, have maintained a comfortable five-point lead on top of the Safa Second Division log.
United grabbed a two-point lead on the log ahead of Highlands Park after beating Trabzon 1-0 away at the Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein. This was a tough match played on an uneven and bumpy pitch.
United pressed from the word go and were rewarded in the 7th minute with a well-taken shot by Katlego Mbatha , who is now showing glimpses of excellence on the pitch with a good knack for scoring goals.
The second half was a scrappy affair, with Mbatha hitting the upright and coming close on numerous occasions. The end result of 1-0 win for United was not a true reflection of the game. United could have easily won the match by a much wider margin if the boys had buried all their chances.
United’s next game was against AmaBEE FC at the Methlareng Stadium in Thembisa. This was another close encounter which United won 1-0. Gavin Abrahams scored from a free kick just outside the box in the 9th minute of the game. Once again, United played well and should have won this one too by a much wider margin but squandered many chances.
On 28 January, United take on Soweto Panthers at 3pm at the Alexandra Stadium, hoping to register another win to consolidate their lead on top of the table. On 31 January at 7pm, United will host FC Kathorus.
“We are calling on the people of Alexandra to rally behind the team and come in their numbers to support the club and help it to gain promotion to the National First Division so that professional football can return to Alexandra,” said club director Nick Nicolaou.
