ALEXANDRA - Student riots at the Vaal University of Technology have sunk an impending Sasol Women's League game between the visiting varsity team and local Alex side Bluebirds Football Club.
Student riots at the Vaal University of Technology have sunk an impending Sasol Women’s League game between the visiting varsity team local Alex side, Bluebirds Football Club.
The game had been scheduled to take place on 14 September at Three Square Sports Facility in Alexandra but has since been cancelled, and a new date still needs to be set.
Bluebirds coach, Malvin Khumalo said he had received a phone call from the mother body, the South African Football Association, informing him about the cancellation of the 14 September game at the request of the varsity team, following student rioting at the campus.
He said the mother body had indicated that a new date will have to be set in consultation with all stakeholders involved, and that announcement would be made in due course.
Meanwhile, Khumalo said he was now organising a friendly to take that slot on the same day, and at the same venue and time.
“I am already building a team for next year and I have a lot of young players that I would like to expose to playing at highest level and this is my opportunity to do that.
“I am talking to various possible opponents for that day and I am confident something will come through and we can have a friendly to expose my young players,” said Khumalo.
