SuperStars outsmart AmaTuks in friendly
ALEXANDRA - The Castle Academy SuperStars beat Absa Premiership side AmaTuks 1-0 in their 3rd game in a series of friendly matches planned against Premier Soccer League and National First Division sides.
The match took place at the University of Pretoria Sports Campus, in which AmaTuks keeper, Washington Arubi, was tested a few times by the Castle Academy SuperStars and also managed to save a penalty taken by the University of North West Vaal Campus defender, Sifiso Nkosi.
While Dylan O’ Brian got the only goal for the SuperStars, one of the objectives of the campaign was to give the top players who ply their skills for teams in the 30 000 strong South African Breweries (SAB) League, the largest South African Football Association-backed senior football development programme, as well as Varsity Football, an opportunity to be tested against professional teams, and to put their talent on display to the coaches and scouts of those teams.
This was the second win for the SuperStars, having beaten NFD side Highlands Park 5-2 in their first friendly match, but later suffering a 2-1 loss to the Mamelodi Sundowns MutliChoice Diski Challenge team.
AmaTuks coach, Sammy Troughton, as the University of Pretoria team are fondly known, was impressed with the quality of the players in the Castle Academy. “Some of these boys have a bright future ahead of them. I saw a few who have the ability to play for NFD sides and maybe one or two who have the potential to play at the higher level.
“It’s projects like this [one] that show that there is enough talent in the country. It’s a good initiative by Castle Lager, giving talented youngsters an opportunity to get their big break,” Troughton said.
Troughton was also pleased with the challenge the SuperStars team gave his players, as AmaTuks are preparing for their first league match this year against Chippa United when the domestic league resumes soon after the African Cup of Nation (Afcon) in February.
