Mighty Heroes needs to focus on missed opportunities, despite victory over LRC FC

Mighty Heroes battling past LRC FC with a 2–1 win in the Alexandra Northrand U15 league on Saturday, they need to focus now on missed opportunities and see how to improve.

Mighty Heroes got yet another opportunity to prove their might with a 2–1 win against Love Reaching Community (LRC) FC in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association U15 league fixture on Saturday.

For most of the game, played at the Altrec Sports Complex, both sides enjoyed possession but equally failed to convert early chances. In the first half, Mighty Heroes looked a bit sharper going forward. Their player, Omphile Mogotsi, threatened to break through the LRC defence twice. First, a handball denied him, and moments later, he was outpaced chasing a loose ball.

LRC nearly conceded a goal when Mighty Heroes player Matsobane Nyama snatched the ball from LRC defender Mpilo Sethi and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Kgopotso Nkgapele. The keeper’s quick reaction spared LRC from conceding.

Heroes’ breakthrough came minutes before the end of the first half. From a corner kick, Katlego Mbokazi found space and fired home to give Heroes a long-awaited lead.

In the second half, LRC’s Aphiwe Mashibini brought his side back into the game with an equaliser, when he beat Mighty Heroes’ Asimbonge Kunene, who was trying to stand up from an early save he had made. The parity didn’t last long. Heroes’ Siyabulela Mdakane scored minutes later, restoring Heroes’ advantage and ultimately sealing their win.

Despite the result, Mighty Heroes U15 coach Bongo Rangata was far from satisfied. “They weren’t playing the usual game we know. They lacked tactical discipline and underestimated the opponent.” He added that his side should have scored at least six goals given the chances created.

Meanwhile, LRC coach Bandile Thindleni admitted his side struggled to cope with the physicality of their opponents in the first half. He said they saw their height, strength, and pace, and knew they couldn’t compete chasing the ball. “We wanted to rotate the ball quicker and play it far away from them, so that we could frustrate them.”

However, that plan did not go as planned in the first half. Thindleni says it is because the boys were a bit tense and didn’t know what to do.
Ultimately, Mighty Heroes earned the points, but both coaches left with a lot to reflect on – Heroes on missed opportunities, and LRC on the importance of composure and teamwork.
