Minerva seals semi-final spot

ALEXANDRA - Minerva High School advanced through to the semi-finals of The Sibusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Schools Tournament after edging Northview by an odd goal.

Minerva High School recently advanced to the semifinals of the Sibusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Schools Tournament after edging Northview High School out by an odd goal.

The tournament favourites led by the nimble-footed Ayanda Mgaga, affectionately known as ‘Mugabe’, made their intentions clear as early as the third minute of the game when Mgaga tested Northview keeper from a long way out.

Northview previously advanced through to the semifinals because their quarter-finals opponents KwaBhekilanga Secondary School were disqualified from the tournament for using ineligible players.

Wandile Dlamini of Minerva produced a brilliant save on the stroke of half-time and made sure that both teams went in to the break still goalless.

Northview came back from the break with more intent, but failed to capitalise on the chances they created and were made to regret it.

When Lesego Teffo, the Northview goalkeeper, made a mess of a corner kick, it resulted into an easy tap of the ball into the nets from Philane Mazibuko, and Minerva took the lead with only a few minutes of the game to go.

Amen Phungula, stand in coach of Minerva, was full of praise for his team and said they are a team to be reckoned with in this year’s tournament.
