Maphuruma sparkles as Iphutheng wallops Emfundisweni

ALEXANDRA - Diminutive Joseph ‘Messi’ Maphuruma displayed the glimpses of his football brilliance as Iphutheng Primary School walloped their counterparts from Emfundisweni 3-0.

Diminutive Joseph ‘Messi’ Maphuruma displayed some of his football brilliance as Iphutheng Primary School walloped their counterparts, Emfundisweni Primary School 3-0.

This was in the group stages of the Alex Discovery Schools League which kicked off on 16 September with matches played every Wednesday afternoon at the No 3 Square Grounds. The final will be played on 11 November.

Maphuruma was at his best as he guided his team to victory by scoring a brace. The Malandela Mighty Heroes U13 player controlled the game and as a midfielder come striker, he had several attempts at goal which could have seen his team winning by an even bigger margin. His first came after he was fouled in the box and he converted the spot kick, and his second came in the second half with a beautifully taken header.

Iphutheng who are the defending champions are currently second on the log with eight points from four matches, in a group that is led by newcomers to the Alex schools soccer scene, Zenzeleni Primary School with 11 points from four games. Iphutheng and Zenzeleni played to a goalless draw in a previous match. Other schools in the group include Ekukhanyisweni, Ithute and Skeen.

In the other group of the competition MC Weiler and Dr Knak are tied at eight points apiece from four games. Other schools in the group include Bovet, Carter, Gordon and Ikage primary schools.
