Promising Alex rugby boys get scholarships

ALEXANDRA - A number of promising rugby players from Alex schools seem to have a rosy future ahead of them after being awarded scholarships to further not just their rugby careers but the academic side as well.

A number of promising rugby players from Alex schools seem to have a rosy future ahead of them after being awarded scholarships to further not just their rugby careers, but their academic futures as well.

Alex rugby coach Elias Mpengu, who is also manager of the Alexandra Rugby Football Club and volunteer coach at Gordon Primary School, said seven of their boys in the development side had been snapped up by scouts from Orchards Primary School.

These were Mfanafuthi Shongwe, the Maluleke twins Kabelo and Karabo, Ndumiso Maseko, Asanda Sithole, Tshepiso Tladi and Tshepo Rapholo, all of whom come from various primary schools in Alex and will be attending Orchards Primary School as of next year.

Also chosen for scholarships were three high school boys Bongumenzi Mbatha, Vivald Avalimao and Thabang Maake, all of whom will be going to Edenvale Boys High School next year.

“We’re grateful to these institutions, especially Orchards which comes here year after year to scout for talent among our boys and thereafter offers them quality education as well as taking care of their rugby talents,” said a delighted Mpengu.

“This is part of the rugby development that we have been talking about and wanting to see being practiced in our communities in order not just to uplift the rugby careers of these young boys but also enhance their academic studies as well.”
