Upcoming Maskandi duo, Abashana, release their first album

ALEXANDRA – Abashana clinch their first nomination with Amalobolo.

The love for traditional music (maskandi) was the reason behind the formation of the maskandi music group called Abashana by two young upcoming maskandi music artists.

Zakhele Nkosi (28) and Richard Goqo (29) from KwaNobuhle Hostel recently released their first album titled Amalobolo with 13 tracks. The duo said they are not in music for fame or money but rather to contribute in nation building through the messages in their songs.

According to Nkosi their love for maskandi music started when they were growing up in Tugela Ferry, a small rural town in KwaZulu-Natal. “We both grew up in a place where maskandi was the most played music and the majority of maskandi artists like Shwi Nomtekhala who have made their names in the music industry come from our hometown. We were inspired by their success in the music industry and their love for traditional music.”

Before Nkosi and Goqo formed Abashana they worked on their individual projects. “Before we formed this group we were doing our individual projects which did not make it to the public. When we met last year (2017) we decided to work together and formed Abashana Maskandi Music Group,” Goqo said.
