Maskandi group appeals to community members to refrain from buying music on the streets

ALEXANDRA – Goqo appealed to all members of the community to refrain from buying music or any artwork on the streets.

A Maskandi group that was formed in 2014 by three youngsters from KwaNobuhle Hostel, Induduzo (which means the comforter) has recently released their third album titled Matavern (tavern-goer) to spread a message of love, peace and good behaviour amongst young people.

A 14-track album that was composed by Richard Goqo (lead vocalist), Siyabonga Sthole and Moya Madondo, is already available on store shelves. The album has received a positive reception from Maskandi music lovers. It features hit tracks like Yenzakahle (do well) and Ngonani (what have I done) among others.

According to Richard Goqo, one of the three founding members of the group, the album was doing wonders in stores compared to the two previously released albums.

The aim behind the formation of the group was to spread a message of love, unity and good behaviour in society. “When we formed the group back in 2014, my colleagues and I had a goal to spread a message of peace in our community, especially hostels. Alexandra Township was and is faced by a number of social ills like crime and substance abuse.

“Our objective when we entered the music industry was to contribute positively to our society. This album was released on 23 December last year and it has already sold more than 1 000 copies. We are very pleased with the manner in which the people have responded to our craft.”

Goqo appealed to members of the community to refrain from buying music or any artwork sold on the streets. “Artists in the music industry have suffered great loss because of piracy. It pains us to see someone selling our music for only R5 on the streets while we’ve spent thousands and thousands of rands producing it,” he concluded.
