Boy found hanging from tree at St Stithians College
A police investigation was currently underway after the body of a 16-year-old boy was found hanging from a tree at St Stithians College in Bryanston, in the north of Johannesburg over the weekend.
Colonel Andries Odendaal of the Randburg police said the boy’s body was found at 6.30am on Saturday, 16 May, Sandton Chronicle reported.
“It appears to have been a suicide and the paramedics declared him dead at the scene,” Odendaal said. He added that the police and the school were working together in the investigation.
Dr Tim Nuttal, the college rector, said the boy was a pupil from another school and not from St Stithians College. He is expected to reveal further details on the deceased and the incident soon.
A resident in the area, Ricky Marima said he was walking with a group of his friends when they discovered the body.
“That body had obviously been there for some time,” explained Marima. “Two of the people I was with were traumatised because neither of them had seen a dead body before,” he said.
He added that 24/7 Security attended to the scene and the Randburg police arrived after an hour.
“What I found strange was how the security failed to find the body in the first place. I also did not appreciate their callous disregard when I suggested they cordon off the area to stop others, especially schoolchildren from wandering onto the scene,” said Marima.
