Residents join hands to improve Horwoods’ Farm in celebration of Earth Day

“From what we saw on the day the children were excited to be part of the event."

Community members were out in their numbers when Essentially Edenvale hosted an Earth Day event at Horwoods’ Farm.

Held on April 27, the event saw community members young and old visit the park to do their part and make a difference in the community.

During the day, community members, volunteers from Revive and local Scout groups set to work removing overgrown vegetation and litter, trimming trees, painting the park, giving it a facelift and improving the overall aesthetic of the park.

Lisa Atkins of Essentially Edenvale said the project went very well.

She said with the 80 volunteers who assisted on the day a lot of work was done at the park in addition to all the preparation work done with the municipal departments.

“From what we saw on the day, the children were excited to be part of the event. They want to be part of nature and in the parks,” said Lisa.

In the weeks leading up to the event, the real estate department as well as Edenvale’s parks department lent a hand in getting the park ready.

Lisa said the real estate department assisted with the repair of a burst pipe while the parks’ various divisions worked on cutting the grass and working on the more problematic areas of the park.Following the project’s completion, it has been decided that the island will be kept as the ‘wild section’ of the park.

She said this was done for multiple reasons but primarily for the preservation of local birdlife and wildlife as well as to add a different aesthetic to the park.

Lisa said the area and grass around the gym equipment and the braais on the ‘wild side’ will still be maintained.

Although the event was held to celebrate Earth Day, Lisa said it was also held to showcase the vision and ideals of Essentially Edenvale.

“We are all from different backgrounds and cultures, but by working together, we achieved something great as a community.”
