Essentially Edenvale hopes to see Horwood’s Farm grow

“The park holds many valuable memories for residents, it’s a part of the town’s heritage and we want to preserve that and honour it.”

After its Earth Day project at Horwood’s Farm, Essentially Edenvale hopes to keep growing the park and assisting the community.

One of the founders of the volunteer organisation, Lisa Atkins, said the Earth Day project was a hit with the community, especially the youth.

She said children were excited to be out in nature helping the park develop.

Described by Lisa as Edenvale’s green heart, she said there are several plans for the public park, all of which will need the community’s assistance.

In recent months, through the community’s assistance, Essentially Edenvale was able to repair four chainsaws, two ride-on mowers, and five brush cutters and provided PPE to the park’s departments.

“I believe that the community is noticing the change but we do need more support. Change takes time and effort from everyone involved,” said Lisa.

She emphasised that if community members don’t step in to assist where they can, everyone ends up suffering.

“The park holds many valuable memories for residents, it’s a part of the town’s heritage and we want to preserve and honour it,” said Lisa.

Lisa said the idea for the future of the park is to make it more interactive for all ages.

Ideas already in place include the painting of chessboards on park tables where community members, young and old can challenge each other to a game of chess.

There is also the idea for a walking trail through the park and into the old Molly Vincent Bird Sanctuary.

“As an organisation, we want to take down some of the already broken walling around the sanctuary and get in there, clearing vegetation, creating an open space for the walking trail and introducing an off-road cycling track,” said Lisa.

Lisa hopes to one day see an environmentally friendly and sustainable walking trail connecting Horwood’s Farm and Protea Park.

A big project on Lisa’s list is the restoration of the Horwood’s Farm Homestead and with this comes acquiring more security at the park to remove troublemakers from the area.

Besides the projects laid out for Horwood’s Farm, Essentially Edenvale’s adopt an island initiative continues to grow strongly.

The initiative sees businesses and community members adopt a road island, clean it, beautify it and maintain it.
