Deep pothole on Modderfontein Road raises safety concerns

“The poor road surface and the pothole have probably existed for a more than a year and very little has been done about the situation.”

The condition of Modderfontein Road has left much to be desired by motorists and residents of the greater Sandringham area.

The area in question is a section of Modderfontein Road North, where a pothole has taken up most of one lane, forcing motorists to move into the oncoming lane to avoid the hazard.

Inyoni Creek resident Shirley Pein said she believed ongoing water-related issues caused the damage.

“The poor road surface and the pothole have probably been there for more than a year, and very little has been done to address the situation. “It’s very deep and poses a danger to motorists,” said Pein.

A yellow barrier has been placed at the location to warn motorists and other road users of the hazard.

Fellow Inyoni Creek resident Lyonell Fliss said he hit the pothole several months ago while driving along the road, damaging part of his vehicle.

He said the damage was substantial and left him out of pocket.

Pein said before the barriers were put in, the garbage bags marked the pothole’s location, warning motorists of the danger.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency was asked for comment by August 14 at 16:00. JRA acknowledged the request, stating that it would first need to inspect the section of road in question.
