Speed to hit hard in the pockets

Motorists who had no consideration for other road users in the past, are in for a surprise.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has implemented further traffic calming measures in roads known for fatal accidents.

Several 60 kilometre road signs warning motorists of possible law enforcement through mobile speed cameras were installed in recent weeks.

Motorists can no longer pretend that they are not aware of the speed limit in North Avenue, Berea, Bezuidenhout and Gordon roads which run through Bez Valley, Judith’s Paarl and other suburbs. These signs were also placed in Cooper Street and Friedland Avenue in Cyrildene.

Clr Carlos da Rocha, ward 66, described JRA’s action as a victory for the ward.

“Although I am still quite upset that the rumble strips did not stay, I must express my happiness that at least some effort was made to attempt to slow down the traffic on these roads.

“I am thankful that JRA went as far as installing speed camera signs that will allow authorities to trap with a camera at any time legally. JRA first reduced the lane widths, constructed small rumble strips between the yellow lines and the pavements and then put up the warning signs. These boards have definitely slowed down the majority of motorists who speed,” he said.

Ms Cecily Squire, who has been demanding some traffic calming measures be implemented in Cooper Street and Friedland Avenue, also welcomed the three warning signs installed in these streets.

“I am happy that JRA installed these signs. No-one can pretend they do not know what the speed limit is anymore,” she said.

Clr Da Rocha said he will continue to push for traffic calming measures in Cumberland Road and parts of Roberts Avenue.
