This is due to ongoing conflict between two taxi associations. The Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) and the Tembisa Johannesburg Taxi Association (TJTA) have been in talks about routes.
The matter will be discussed in a meeting to be held on July 30. The conflict revolves around the TJTA ferrying people from Greenstone and Stoneridge to the Johannesburg Central Business District, a route that the ATA has been using.
Another bone of contention is the pricing of the trips, with the TJTA charging less for a trip downtown. This results in commuters choosing the cheaper trip and this affects the ATA’s.
“We are dealing with a conflict situation and we are having numerous meetings to try to resolve the matter quickly as this affects the commuters,” said Mr J Mojela, spokesperson for the ATA.
Some commuters have had to find alternative transport to get home.
“I really hope they resolve this situation because some of us have children waiting at home and some still at the daycare centre,” said Ms Nonku Maphumulo, who uses the taxis daily from Greenstone to the Central Business District.
Another commuter, Mr Lungile Nkomo, said, “The taxi drivers are just disrespectful because the taxis are at the rank but only ferry people when they want to and when the queues are extremely long.”
