Children of Success through Honest Initiative to Nurture Success (SHINE) Education Centre, in Edenvale, arrived back on July 25 after a few weeks’ holiday.

As a surprise, members of Ricoh South Africa, an automation company based in Linbro Park, attended the morning’s activities.

SHINE Education Centre managing director KC Dickinson said they interacted with the children, watched them at work in their various classes, and read with them.

Ricoh donated desks and provided lunch to support the work that SHINE volunteers do on Saturday mornings. SHINE Education Centre, a volunteer-run non-profit company, holds classes in maths, English, Afrikaans, and Life Skills on Saturday mornings. Since 2019, SHINE has been working to ignite a love of learning by helping children build numeracy, literacy, and essential life skills.

According to Ricoh’s Jessie Makhudu, “Not only was this a good time for the children (with chicken soup included in the morning’s treats), but also a really good time for the Ricoh staff who attended.”

Dickinson also acknowledged Dunvegan Primary School for supporting them.

As part of their Mandela Day initiatives, Dunvegan Primary School Grade Five learners collected stationery and lunch snacks for SHINE Education Centre, which provides literacy and numeracy support alongside enrichment activities for children between grades four and nine.

The managing director said it was encouraging to witness children helping children in this way.

He added, “A huge thank you to Dunvegan Primary School teachers and learners. SHINE is now well supplied with lunch packs, stationery and treats.”
