Police pounce on vagrants

Sebenza SAPS, with the help of the EMPD equestrian unit and security companies, held a crime prevention operation on July 31.

Sebenza police officers patrolled open areas in Sebenza and Founders Hill and were assisted by EMPD officers on horseback.

Together they flushed out five vagrants and suspicious people. One of them had committed a crime recently and was out on bail.

Sebenza SAPS officers took the suspect to the police station for further questioning.

Warrant Officer Moses Morake, the Sebenza SAPS sector three manager, organised the operation after several business robberies took place in the area recently.

“We suspect the criminals operate mainly at night and enter business premises from behind because they have easier access from the veld side,” he said.

He added that cable theft has decreased recently but there were still signs of cable thieves in the veld as several abandoned camps were spotted where the thieves had burnt off the plastic insulation from the cables before selling it.

Police officers also checked the identities of all the people they found in the veld.

Those suspected of being illegal immigrants were also taken to the Sebenza Police Station for questioning.
