Group believes unity is strength

The Magwanza Youth Group is a group of young Kenyans living in South Africa.

The group adheres to togetherness and unity in the community and believe that unity is strength.

The name Magwanza is derived from a Swahili word, ‘Mwanga’, which means light. The group was formed in 2007, when a few friends met and saw the need of being together, eating together and fellowshipping together.

“From this point on, we have been able to move from a group of 12 individuals to a group of 63, with a lot of friends who come together when the need arises,” said Ms Joy Macharia, who speaks of behalf of the group.

The group has seen the need and importance of a community living together, and coming together, in times of sorrow and happiness.

The aim is to promote communities in the diaspora and to be of assistance to them socially and emotionally. The group holds its monthly meetings at the Hofland Recreational Centre in Bez Valley.

They recently donated food parcels to the Mother Theresa Home in Yeoville on August 18.

“It is by being together that we came up with the idea of being generous and extending a hand of sympathy to the less fortunate in the local communities. We therefore contributed and donated food and clothing to the home to bless them,” concluded Ms Macharia.
