Rhodes Park Soccer League log leaders, Madulamoho FC, had to come back from three goals down to draw level with their less-fancied opponents, Sporting Leon FC.
The match, played at the Rhodes Park Soccer Grounds on Saturday last week, saw end-to-end action from both U/17 teams, who hail from Hillbrow.
Sporting Leon FC drew first blood through 15-year-old Musa Zondo. The striker took a long-range drive just outside Madulamoho’s 18-yard area. An awkward bounce saw the ball ending up in the back of the net.
The goal rattled Madulamoho FC, who gave away possession in dangerous areas. It was not long before Sporting Leon’s persistent pressure was rewarded. Defender Mangi Vele tore through the Madulamoho defence to power in the second goal.
At half-time the score was 2-0 to Sporting Leon.
Madulamoho coach, Mr Freedom Jacobs, clearly had stern words for his players, as they came out with renewed energy in the second half.
They camped inside their opponents’ half, pressing them through the middle. Madulamoho’s efforts were rewarded when Gift Maseko latched onto a loose ball and stymied the ‘keeper with a curler that would beat even the most seasoned of goalkeepers.
The goal changed the complexion of the game, as Sporting Leon tried to defend their lead. This only opened the door for more mistakes at the back, as they scrambled to clear the ball.
Sporting Leon FC managed to catch Madulamoho FC on the break after losing possession. Striker Zito Phangwane punished Madulamoho with a low shot that beat the ‘keeper.
The goalkeeper, Mduduzi Ndlovu, was replaced immediately. Sporting Leon FC took advantage of the change, constantly testing the new goalkeeper with shots from range.
It was during this stint that Madulamoho FC pulled one back after the Sporting Leon goalkeeper parried the ball back into play and Thulani Ntuli chose his spot and put the ball in the net to put the score at 3-2.
It was in the final moments of the game, when Sporting Leon lost concentration and allowed Thabo Khumalo acres of space. He showed composure and slotted the ball home to end the match 3-3.
