Vacant stands remain a problem for community
Vacant land in Bertrams is being used for various illegal activities.
Stand numbers 44, 45, 46 and 48 continue to be an eye-sore for a number of residents on Gordan Road.
The EXPRESS previously reported on the stands and to date, nothing has been done about it. Reports includes tyres being burnt on the stands and rubbish that includes discarded furniture being dumped.
Last week, the fire department was called out after another tyre was left burning on the stand.
Such activity is problematic, especially given the close proximity of a retirement village, which is opposite stand 45. The centre also provides frail-care to patients and the smoke from burning rubber exacerbates breathing problems with the elderly.
There have also been allegations of illegal activities taking place on the vacant stands. A body was discovered on one of the stands a few months ago.
Mrs Merle Howroyd, who is the manager of the old age home opposite the stand, has had enough.
“This has been happening for a while now and some resolution to this matter would be appreciated,” said Mrs Howroyd.
She said the rubbish on the stands was attracting rats.
The EXPRESS sent enquiries to Ms Dudu Lushaba and Ms Thembelihle Radebe from the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), but no comment was received at the time of going to print.
