Substation sex shock
Prostitutes and their clients are using an electrical substation on Steyn Street in Observatory for sexual acts.
“Some of the things that happen there at night are horrific. Prostitutes and their clients start as soon as it gets dark and continue until the early hours of the morning,” said Ms Mantoa Sephooa, who works as a domestic worker at a house nearby the substation.
The substation is quiet during the day, but comes alive at night as prostitutes scramble for time and space inside the substation.
Residents raised their concerns at Yeoville Community Police Forum (YCPF) meetings on numerous occasions, but said nothing seems to have been done about it.
Mr Joseph Dube, the secretary of the YCPF, said he has tried for months to get the matter resolved but with no luck.
“We have been trying to get hold of all the relevant people but we keep being sent from one person to another. We have even escalated the matter to council and we are still waiting,” said Mr Dube. He said he wants council to implement measures to make sure that the substation is secured.
Ms Sephooa said there is a fence around the substation with a locked gate, however the prostitutes simply jump over the gate and proceed with their activities.
“Used condoms have been found near the substation. At night you will find cars parked on the street,” said Ms Sephooa.
Observatory residents have complained about the way in which the prostitutes conduct themselves in public for years. The EXPRESS previously reported on prostitutes who were exposing themselves to passing motorists at the corner of Frances and Innes streets.
Residents alleged these acts, on a street where a primary school is located, were happening during the day.
Mr Dube, who is also the secretary for the Sector 3 Crime Forum, said he has written numerous e-mails to the director of region F, Ms Irene Mafune, and nothing has been done.
The EXPRESS forwarded an enquiry to Ms Mafune, Ms Dudu Lushaba and Ms Thembelihle Radebe, from the City of Johannesburg. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
