Sister Cramer looking back
She was born Martha Mattie Susana Groenewald on February 1919. She was known as Sister Cramer by her patients and colleagues.
Now she is known as Mrs Oberholzer at a retirement home.
She moved from De Aarin, in the Western Cape, to Gauteng in 1937 and on July 7, 1939, Sister Cramer was married to Mr Nicholus Cramer.
They were blessed with three children, Nicolean, Eddie and Mariana.
Mr Cramer died in 1976. In 1981, Sister Cramer was married to Mr Albert Oberholzer. Their marriage did not last long as Mr Oberholzer died two years later.
She trained as a general nurse at the Johannesburg General Hospital. In 1946, she started working as a nurse and a midwife at the General Hospital. This is where she taught midwifery for three years.
In her nearly 35 years as a midwife, Sister Cramer said she helped deliver between 4 000 and 5 000 babies in different areas in the East Rand.
She worked in places like Germiston, Elsburg, Wadeville, Alberton, Primrose, Wychwood, Edenvale and Bedfordview.
