Reddam House grade 12 pupil, Manli Hu, was placed first in the East Rand Region of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) National Accounting Olympiad for 2013.
Manli, one of the 252 pupils from a field of 1 521 entrants to achieve a score of over 80 percent in round one, advanced to round two of the Olympiad to ultimately finish first in the East Rand Region.
A Chinese national, Manli moved to Reddam House early in 2012 and could not speak English on her arrival in the country.
She had also never studied accounting before.
The aim of the National Accounting Olympiad is to make Accounting as a subject more accessible to all pupils and to expose the option of professional accountancy as a career opportunity to aspiring young accounting pupils in grade 12 countrywide.
