RTMC urges motorists to renew licence discs ahead of festive season

More than 2.2 million vehicle licence discs are due to expire in November and December, prompting the Road Traffic Management Corporation to urge motorists to renew their documentation before the festive season.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs and driving licences ahead of the festive season, with more than 2.2 million vehicle licence discs due to expire in November and December.

According to the South African Government News Agency, increased traffic volumes during the festive season make it essential for motorists to ensure their documentation is valid and up to date.

A total of 2 248 795 vehicle licence discs are due to expire over the two months. Gauteng accounts for the largest share, with 851 687 discs due for renewal, followed by the Western Cape with 374 761 and KZN with 327 014.

Motorists can renew their vehicle licence discs online at Online.natis.gov.za and arrange for delivery to their homes or workplaces.

The RTMC said the online platform had recorded eight million transactions since its launch in 2022.

Motorists are also encouraged to use the extended operating hours at RTMC driving licence testing centres, which operate seven days a week from 07:00 to 21:00, to renew their driving licences before the festive season.

The RTMC has also urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long-distance journeys.

Particular attention should be paid to tyres, brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and other essential safety components. Vehicles should be inspected and serviced where necessary.

Heavy vehicle drivers are encouraged to undergo health checks to ensure they are medically fit to drive.

The corporation stressed that drivers should get enough rest, avoid driving while fatigued and take regular breaks during long journeys. Transport operators must ensure their drivers are fit for duty and their vehicles are safe before being dispatched.

Proper journey planning, responsible driving and regular vehicle maintenance are essential to reducing road crashes, injuries and fatalities during the festive season, the RTMC said.

Motorists are reminded to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances, never drive under the influence of alcohol and ensure all vehicle occupants wear seat belts.

The RTMC urged motorists to make road safety a priority, noting that renewing licence discs, checking vehicle roadworthiness and ensuring drivers are fit to travel are important steps towards safer roads.
