Malvern Master wins the derby
Malvern Masters scooped a narrow 1-0 win during the Malvern derby against Malvern East FC at on Sunday last week.
The two played an entertaining game of football at the Rhodes Park sports grounds.
The game was played from the mid-field through the wings. On the Masters side, Juluka Mabizela lead the attack, while Sibongiseni Singo and Amed Makana were in charge of the attack for Malvern East FC.
The game went to the half-time break without either side scoring.
It was Thulani Zulu’s goal that ended the stalemate 15 minutes into the second half. The Masters defended their lead until the end.
Masters’ captain, Albert Bashin Mangena, said during half time, the coach told them to use their wings.
“From the beginning of the game we were firing on all cylinders but we could not score. The coach told us to use our wings, so we started using our mid-field to distribute the ball to both sides. By that we created more chances. Though they were also coming at us, we were pushing forward more. We used our wingers more and that is how we scored our goal,” said Mangena.
Malvern East FC’s coach, Trust Ngcobo, said his team was on top but committed one mistake which cost them the game.
“We had ball possession the whole game. Our backline lost concentration and they scored. My boys, especially the mid-field, were good but we did not take our chances. In soccer ,when you do not score goals, you do not win matches. That is what happened to us,” said Ngcobo.
