Eastleigh water leak leaves resident frustrated after four months
For four months, a municipal water valve on 9a High Road, Eastleigh, has been leaking, with some of the water slowly seeping underneath and slowly damaging the pavement.
A water leak has been ongoing at 9a High Road in Eastleigh for four months.
Resident Collin Kay said he has repeatedly contacted the City of Ekurhuleni about the leak but did not receive a reference number.
Kay said the water was also slowly damaging their recently installed paving.

On August 14, Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart confirmed that the leak had been ongoing for a long time and was coming from a municipal valve, but had not been attended to.
“I suspect it was not closed properly when they last fixed a leak, and I have asked the depot manager to investigate. They are currently working on a leak in the area, so hopefully the plumber can just pop there and see.”
Hart said that if a reference number had not been issued, the City was probably not aware of the leak.
She explained that there are occasional problems with obtaining reference numbers through the City of Ekurhuleni App, meaning residents sometimes have to try more than once. However, she said calling the City’s call centre on 086 0543 000 usually results in a reference number being issued immediately.

Hart added that she normally escalates leaks to the water depot through the Edenvale CCC Service Delivery WhatsApp group.
She admitted that there are currently too many leaks in Ward 18 to keep track of all of them.
Hart expressed sympathy for residents who feel they have to ‘nag’ the municipality before basic infrastructure problems receive attention, saying that she sometimes has to do the same.
“In all honesty, we mostly have to nag for water meter-related leaks, but normal water leaks are sometimes repaired without me even knowing about them.”
The City of Ekurhuleni was asked on August 7 whether it was aware of the leak, why a reference number had not been issued, whether an inspection had been or would be conducted, and when this would happen.
A follow-up email was sent on August 17, but no comment had been provided by the time of going to print.
