Vehicle theft concerns station commander

Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, the Jeppe SAPS station commander, is concerned about the spate of vehicle thefts in his precinct.

Seven vehicles were stolen in Jeppestown and Bez Valley from November 1 to 4.

“According to the cases that were opened, there was an indication that the victims were leaving their vehicles unattended and parked on the street. In most cases, the victims claimed to have closed the windows and locked the doors properly. The victims went inside a house or building and when they came out their vehicles were gone,” said Brig Mariemuthoo.

He provided the following tips:

  • Make sure you do not park your vehicle in a dark location.
  • Double check if the car has been locked. Using an immobiliser helps but criminals are using a “jamming” device that stops people from locking the vehicle.
  • Make sure you check on your vehicle constantly if you leave it parked outside a house or building.
  • Install alarm systems in cars and use gear locks.
  • Do not leave items lying on the seats or in places where people can see them. Remove radios if possible.
  • Never park the car and sit inside it in isolated or dark places.
  • Do not pick up hitch-hikers.
  • If you see people in a suspicious looking vehicle following you, drive to the nearest police station.
  • Be aware of the modus operandi of hijacking and theft of motor vehicles in your area.

“By simply adhering to this advice, we at the Jeppe SAPS believe these crimes can be reduced and controlled,” said Brig Mariemuthoo.
