Elfie joins Wedge Gardens’ team
Having a full-time occupational therapist will strengthen Wedge Gardens’ multi-disciplinary and holistic approach to rehabilitation.
She’s young, petite and bubbly, but occupational therapist Ms Elfie du Toit has shoulders broad enough to support recovering addicts.
Ms Du Toit joined the team at the Rand Aid Association-run Wedge Gardens Treatment Centre at the beginning of January.
Having a full-time occupational therapist will strengthen Wedge Gardens’ multi-disciplinary and holistic approach to rehabilitation.
“Activity-based interventions promote the development of life skills and help entrench the lifestyle changes needed if substance abusers are to retake their place in society,” said Ms Du Toit.
Ms Du Toit, a graduate of the University of the Free State, did experiential learning at the Free State Psychiatric Complex during her studies. She did her community service at the National District Hospital.
She was working at a school for children with special education needs when she heard about the job opportunity at Wedge Gardens.
“I am passionate about helping people through rehabilitation and my time at the psychiatric hospital means I am more aware of the challenges that come with a dual diagnosis. Addiction, at times, is associated with mental illness and these conditions have to be treated concurrently,” said Ms Du Toit.
Ms Du Toit’s responsibility will include assistance in the detoxification and rehabilitation phases of treatment, follow-up and support. Ms Du Toit will also help identify any co-ordination problems that manifest in several long-term addicts, teach life and coping skills and relaxation exercises.
Donations of any arts or craft materials, water bottles, board games and puzzles of 500 pieces or less are welcome.
