Ms Smyth, who was born on January 25, 1912, celebrated her milestone with family and staff of St Ann. She also received a birthday cake from a truck rental company based in Isando.

Staff of the St Ann residence sang to Ms Smyth as she received her gifts.

“Even at 102, she is still very alert. People love to listen to her stories from her childhood and the wonderful life she has lived. She has been in frail care at St Ann’s in Edenvale, but she is well looked after by the dedicated staff under the guidance of Sister Jean,” said Ms Marylou Smyth.

Ms Smyth worked at an insurance company until she was 75. She also worked at the Baragwanath Hospital during the war years as a volunteer, tending to wounded troops coming home.

Ms Smyth was the eldest child of 11 children. She has three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
