From homeless to hopeful, the Angels help

The group aims to have workshops for women to teach them new arts and crafts, in order to generate an income for themselves.

Helping Angels (Helpende Engele) is a registered non-profit organisation based in Kensington.

It is championed by Mr Danie Roode who contacted the EXPRESS after reading the article, Homeless and alone.

“Our vision is to obtain a piece of land and relocate selected people from informal settlements to become self sufficient by farming and planting their own vegetables,” said Mr Roode.

He said the group aims to have workshops for women to teach them new arts and crafts, in order to generate an income for themselves.

“In the meantime, we are busy with a fundraising campaign to help white informal settlements in and outside Pretoria. We supply them with food and clothing. Whatever their need is, we try to help as far as possible,” said Mr Roode.

He said it did not matter where the need arose.

“If there are people in need anywhere, we will try our best to help,” said Mr Roode. He added that they also collect food, clothing, blankets, furniture, toys, camping equipment and toiletries to assist them in their campaign to support underprivileged people.

Mr Roode is assisted by Ms Taryn Tissen and Mr Anzac Lucan Massey. “It is our mission to give people back their self esteem and to build them up to be proud citizens of South Africa. We also aim to give them a place in society,” said Mr Roode. He said no matter how small, directly or indirectly, every bit helps.

“When I feed the homeless, it warms my heart when they say “Thank you”, or give a little change to pay for their meal. Interact with the homeless by giving and it will change your heart too,” said Mr Roode.
