Malvern resident laments water wastage

"What does an account number have to do with a leak on the road, with gallons of water going to waste, while people in other parts of the country walk for long distances just to fill their buckets," said the resident.

A Malvern resident has had enough of water being wasted due to a leaking water meter just outside his house.

The water meter is on the corner of Heriot and St Fursquin streets. “I have tried everything to reach some form of resolution for the problem, which has persisted since October last year. I have been sent from pillar to post, only getting promises,” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous. He said he has been to the municipal offices in Braamfontein to report the matter personally, but was asked for an account number.

“What does an account number have to do with a leak on the road, with gallons of water going to waste, while people in other parts of the country walk for long distances just to fill their buckets,” said the resident.

He said the situation was disgusting and shameful. “I am helping them to do their jobs and all I get is the run-around. I have even spoken to the ward councillor about it and she said she was shocked and would ensure the problem is attended to. I am still waiting,” said the resident.

He said he felt the matter could have been resolved much earlier. “A few weeks ago there was a guy who works for Joburg Water on the street. I approached him in the hope that he would take note of the problem, but he looked at me and never said a word,” said the resident. The EXPRESS sent an enquiry to Ms Dudu Lushaba and Ms Thembelihle Radebe from the City of Joburg. Attempts were also made to get comment from Clr Allison van der Molen, from ward 118. They had not responded at the time of going to print.
