Joburg Water appoints contractors to implement T-Codes project

Joburg Water is rolling out its T-codes Project to curb theft and address faulty meters.
Ms Millicent Kabwe, from Joburg Water, said five contractors were appointed to help address problematic meters across the city.
“The objective of the contract is to ensure the effective metering of water being supplied to customers. Johannesburg Water recognises that when customers’ meters are in operational conditions at all times, it will allow for accurate consumer consumption monitoring and billing. Meter installation and maintenance will also assist Johannesburg Water to record water flow data and improve the quality of the water demand and conservation strategy. This project will also curb the recent spike in the number of reported stolen domestic meters. The meters that are targeted are the old version ones that have little metal value. With the replacement of the meters through the T-codes project, general plastic meters are used,” she said.
Contractors will do the following:
- replace leaking/faulty meters and valves.
- Raise buried meters.
- Locate meters which have been labelled “unable to locate”.
- Relocate meters currently inside properties. The meters will be relocated out of the properties to allow easy access for meter reading staff.
- Exchange meters scheduled for replacement with above-ground meters.
The work will be carried out over a period of four months.
“Residents can rest assured that areas where work is conducted will be reinstated to the state it was previously and that any new installation which is reported as being faulty, will be repaired by the responsible contractor,” said Ms Kabwe.
Contractors will have identification tags. Residents should not let people without identification tags into their homes.
