Four suspects linked to the fatal shooting of 58-year-old Meadowdale resident Chantel Smith in Dunvegan were arrested on August 25.

The Bedfordview and Edenvale News first reported on the June 10 shooting on the day of the incident, when details of the crime emerged. The publication has since provided ongoing updates on the case as the investigation progressed.

The shooting occurred on Dunvegan Avenue, outside the road enclosure in front of several businesses.

Police operation leads to arrests

Ekurhuleni District police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said police believe the shooting was the result of a failed hijacking.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page on August 26, CAP (Community Active Protection) – Armed Response and Offsite Monitoring stated the arrests were made during a joint operation in the early hours of August 25.

The operation involved the SAPS Gauteng PHO DPC Tracking Team, SAPS Gauteng TRT, Edenvale SAPS Detectives and CAP Specialised Operations.

CAP stated four suspects were arrested on charges of murder. A vehicle linked to the investigation was recovered, together with a second vehicle that was previously hijacked. The organization stated the arrests were the result of more than two months of investigative work and close cooperation.

Suspects remanded in custody

Sekgobela said the suspects are aged 44, 46, 48 and 52. They appeared in court and were remanded for a formal bail hearing.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the four suspects were arrested for murder and made their first appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on August 27.
