Born in Russia in 1915, during the early years of World War I, Ms Kira Plessis spent much of her young adult years travelling Europe.
“I loved visiting new places,” said the sprightly woman who turned 99 on March 29.
It was in South Africa that she married the man who was to be her life-mate for nearly four decades before he died.
“He was a Frenchman with family in France, so we regularly travelled abroad to visit them,” said Ms Plessis.
Although they had no children, she was blessed with a loving niece and nephew.
A resident of Rand Aid Association’s Thembalami Care Centre, Ms Plessis lived in the nearby Tarentaal retirement village, also Rand Aid-run, until she was no longer able to live independently.
On March 19, she was the guest of honour at Thembalami’s monthly birthday bash, organised by the Inyoni Creek Angels.
