Illegal dumping at sand heap continues
Illegal dumping and other problems around a sand heap in Bruma persist, even though residents have called for action on several occasions.
Earlier this year, it was reported that residents were furious over a sand dump in the suburb.
The sand was apparently dumped by a developer near the old Bruma Flea Market in 2011.
Ms Valda Gossmann, from the Bruma Residents’ Association, said the association was informed that this would be a temporary arrangement for six months.
The former councillor for the area, Ms Alison van der Molen, informed the EXPRESS previously that permission was granted to store only a third of the sand which is currently on-site.
The intention, according to her, was to use the sand as backfill for Bruma Lake during its conversion into a river.
Now, the sand dump is believed to be contributing to crime.
People passing the dump have apparently been attacked and a number of people driving bakkies openly dump garbage there.
Ms Gossmann said although city workers dug a trench around the dump, it is ineffective.
“The new date for the removal of the sand dump was March 2014. Sadly, this has again not happened,” said Ms Gossmann.
The EXPRESS forwarded an enquiry to the City of Johannesburg. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
