Joseph re-elected as chairperson of Ilka

Mrs Lornette Joseph was re-elected as the chairperson of the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) recently.

She said she is glad the community has put their trust in her for another year.

“It is great to know the community has faith in me. My aim is to make Kensington a better place to live,” she said.

Mrs Joseph said residents can look forward to several new initiatives this year.

“I created an application for Kensington residents. Residents can take photographs of problems and share it on this application. We will send these problems to the councillor and council,” said Mrs Joseph.

On a soon to be launched website, residents and paid up members, will also be able to share their service delivery complaints and photographs of problem areas. Committee members will try to address these concerns.

“The aim of the website is also to keep residents informed about what is going on in the suburb. We also urging residents who have old photographs and information about the suburb to contact us. We would like to add this information to the website,” said Mrs Joseph.

A few months ago, Ilka convinced the Cleveland and Jeppe SAPS management to host one sector crime forum meeting for Kensington. Precinct boundaries were creating problems, such as residents not knowing which station they are served by and having to attend two sector meetings to find out what is happening throughout the suburb. Joint public meetings held so far have yielded positive results.

“We want to maintain a close and strong relationship between the SAPS and us. We also want to start a Kensington Heroes initiative. The winners can be anyone in Kensington, be it residents, SAPS members or officials. We need businesses to come on board for this,” she said.

There will be more focus on the Kensington Area Project this year. This project entails “breaking up” Kensington into bite-size areas. Each area should have a chairperson to provide feedback to Ilka. “This will bring about more efficiency when dealing with crime and service delivery complaints. We also plan on installing cameras in dumping hotspots to point the JMPD in the right direction so offenders can be dealt with,” said Mrs Joseph.

She looks forward to working with the community over the next year.
